Pan Aadhar link, Nowadays we are hearing some news on linking of Aadhar card with your Pan card and have also a deadline or last date to link one’s Aadhar with a pan card which is 31 March 2023. if the PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by March 31, then firstly your PAN will become inoperative. Why Pan Aadhar Linking is required?

According to section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, every person who has been allotted a permanent account number (PAN) as of the 1st day of July 2017, and who is eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number, shall intimate his Aadhaar number in the prescribed form and manner. In other words, such persons have to mandatorily link their Aadhaar and PAN before the prescribed date ( 31st March 2023). And if the PAN is not linked with Aadhaar by March 31, then firstly your PAN will become inoperative.

What documents are required to link Aadhar with Pan?

  2. Aadhar Number

In how many ways we can link Aadhar with Pan?

You can link your Aadhar with Pan in many ways such as

  1. Online link with pre logging Income tax site

How to link Aadhar with Pan online?

You can link your PAN with Aadhaar by the following the process online:

  1. Open the Income Tax e-filing portal – https://incometax.gov.in/
  2. Register on it (if not already done). Your PAN (Permanent Account Number) will be your user id.
  3. Log in by entering the User ID, password, and date of birth.
  4. A pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. If not, go to ‘Profile Settings’ on the Menu bar and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  5. Details such as name date of birth and gender will already be mentioned as per the PAN details.
  6. Verify the PAN details on the screen with the ones mentioned on your Aadhaar. Pls. note that if there is a mismatch, you need to get the same corrected in either of the documents.
  7. If the details match, enter your Aadhaar number and click on the “link now” button.
  8. A pop-up message will inform you that your Aadhaar has been successfully linked to your PAN
  9. You may also visit https://www.utiitsl.com/ OR https://www.egov-nsdl.co.in/ to link your PAN and Aadhaar.

You can link your PAN with Aadhaar by the following steps online pre-login or post login

Linking Pan Aadhar online pre-login

  1. Open the Income Tax e-filing portal – https://incometax.gov.in/
  2. Visit the quick link then click on link aadhar
  3. Then a pop-up window will appear, prompting you to link your PAN with Aadhaar.
  4. Details such as name date of birth and gender will already be mentioned as per the PAN details.

Can I link my PAN and Aadhaar manually / offline?

Yes, you can. Send an SMS from your mobile registered with Aadhaar to either of the PAN providers (NSDL or UTIITSL) at 567678 or 56161. Use this specific format in your SMS: UIDPAN <12-digit Aadhaar> <10-digit PAN>. Ensure there are spaces between UIDPAN, your Aadhaar number, and your PAN.

How to check the link Aadhar Status?

Just follow the steps to check the link Aadhar Status-

  1. Open the Income Tax e-filing portal – https://incometax.gov.in/
  2. Visit the quick link then click on the link Aadhar status
  3. Then enter your Pan Number and Aadhar Number and click on the view link Aadhar status
  4. A Pop-up window will show you the status of linking
  5. If found linked then ok but if not found linked then you should link your Aadhar with the pan card first.

What should I do if my PAN becomes inoperative?

Your PAN will become inoperative if you do not link your Aadhaar with PAN by the prescribed date (presently 31 March 2023). If your PAN becomes inoperative, you will need to use the Link Aadhaar service on the e-Filing portal and link your Aadhaar. Your PAN will become operative after you link it.

What will happen if I don’t link Aadhaar and PAN?

It is mandatory to quote your Aadhaar number and link it to your PAN for filing income tax returns. If you fail to link your Aadhaar with your PAN by 31st March 2023, your PAN will become inoperative. If your PAN becomes inoperative, you’re required to furnish, intimate, or quote your PAN under the Income Tax Act. It will be deemed that you have not furnished, intimated, or quoted your PAN (as the case may be).

For whom is Aadhaar-PAN linking not compulsory?

Aadhaar-PAN linking presently does not apply to any individual who is:

  1. residing in the States of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya;
  2. a non-resident as per the Income Tax Act, 1961;
  3. of the age of eighty years or more at any time during the previous year;
  4. not a citizen of India.

However, these exemptions may change or be revoked later.

How do I link PAN and Aadhaar if there is a mismatch in name or date of birth?

You should Initiate the Aadhaar linking process, enter your PAN and Aadhaar number, and the name, date of birth and mobile number details as per your Aadhaar card, the income tax department will send an OTP on the registered mobile number to enable the linking. In the case of a mismatch in the date of birth, you need to update your Aadhaar card data.

Can I file my ITR if my PAN and Aadhaar are not linked?

You need to quote your Aadhaar number for the purpose of filing your income tax return. In the absence of an Aadhaar number, you need to quote your Aadhaar enrolment number.

Does a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) require to link PAN and Aadhaar?

An NRI need not obtain Aadhaar and link their PAN with Aadhaar. Only a resident Indian can get an Aadhaar number. An individual whose stay in India is 182 days or more in the previous 12 months, immediately before the date of an Aadhaar application is a resident.

While trying for PAN-Aadhar linking, I get a message that the authentication has failed?

The authentication fails due to a mismatch in the data between your PAN and Aadhaar. You can check for the correctness of the data such as name, date of birth, and mobile number, amongst others.

What is the importance of the Pan Aadhar Link?

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is very important for all PAN cardholders because of the following reasons:

  1. Linking PAN with Aadhaar will help in tackling the problem of multiple PAN cards issued in the same name
  2. All PAN cards that are not linked with Aadhaar will be deactivated after 31st March 2023
  3. Your income tax return form would not be processed if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar
  4. The user will get a summarised detail of taxes levied on him for future reference

What to do if a mistake shows on Pan Card?

In case your name in the PAN card is wrongly spelt, follow these steps to make corrections:

  1. Visit the e-filing website of NSDL
  2. Select the ‘Changes or Correction in existing PAN data/Reprint of PAN Card (No changes in Existing PAN Data)’ option from the drop-down menu
  3. Select the individual category and enter your details
  4. Make payment and submit your form online after Aadhaar e-KYC
  5. Your updated PAN will be sent to your address
  6. Once you receive your PAN card, you can link your PAN with your Aadhaar

What to do if a mistake shows on the Aadhar card?

In case your name in the Aadhaar card is wrongly spelt, follow these steps to make corrections:

  1. Visit an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre
  2. Carry a self-attested copy of your proof of Identity
  3. Fill out the Aadhaar Enrolment Form
  4. Submit the form along with the documents
  5. You will get an acknowledgement slip that contains the update request number
  6. This URN can be used to check the status of your update request
  7. Once your update request is processed and the name is corrected, you can link your PAN with Aadhaar
