Types of GST Annual Return-Taxpayers

GST Annual Return-There is four types of GST annual returns that will be required to file for the said financial year before the due dates. So, all types of GST returns need to file as per the scheme opted by the taxpayer which is given below:

What is GSTR-9 (GST Annual return)?

Form GSTR-9 is an annual return to be filed once for each financial year, by the registered taxpayers who were regular taxpayers, including SEZ units and SEZ developers. The taxpayers are required to furnish details of purchases, sales, input tax credit or refund claimed or demand created, etc. in this return.

Who needs to file GSTR-9?

Form GSTR-9 is to be filed by a person who is registered as a normal taxpayer, including SEZ unit or SEZ developer, and the taxpayers who have withdrawn from the composition scheme to normal taxpayers at any time during the financial year. but composition taxpayers can file Annual Return in Form GSTR-9A.
Annual Return is not required to be filed by casual taxpayer / Non Resident taxpayer / ISD/ OIDAR Service Providers.

What is GSTR-9A (GST Annual return)?

Form GSTR-9A is an annual return to be filed once, for each financial year, by taxpayers who have opted for a composition scheme, for any period during the said financial year. The taxpayers are required to furnish details regarding outward supplies, inward supplies, taxes paid, any refund claimed or demand created, or input tax credit availed or reversed due to opting out or opting into the composition scheme.

Who needs to file GSTR-9A?

GSTR-9A annual GST return needs to file for those taxpayers who are composition taxpayers under the composition scheme. And moreover who is filing GSTR-4 for the period of a financial year. This will include a taxpayer –

  1. Who has opted for the composition scheme since registration and has never opted out subsequently; and
  2. Who have opted in for composition scheme any time during the financial year; and
  3. And who have opted in for composition but subsequently opted out any time during the year.

What is GSTR-9B (GST Annual return)?

Under the annual returns category, GSTR-9B is a return to be filed by every E-commerce operator. This E-commerce is required to collect tax at source under section 52 (5) of the CGST Act, 2017.

The details of outward supplies of goods and services return if any, and the amount collected during the financial year should be presented along with GSTR-9B. It also gives heads up on the details filed in GSTR-8, GSTR-8 is a monthly return to be filed by E-Commerce operators.

Who needs to file GSTR-9B?

GSTR-9B annual GST returns are to file for the financial year by the e-commerce operators. And further who have filed GSTR-8 during the year.

What is GSTR-9C (GST Annual return)?

Form GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement, duly verified and digitally signed by a Chartered Accountant/ Cost Accountant. This form is required to be furnished along with the filing of annual return in Form GSTR-9, by the taxpayer whose aggregate turnover is above a specified limit, during a financial year.

Who needs to file GSTR-9C?

Finally, GSTR-9C needs to file by the taxpayers whose annual turnover exceeds Rs. 2 crores during the financial year.

Normal taxpayers (including SEZ unit and developer) whose aggregate turnover is above a
certain thresholds are required to get their accounts audited by Chartered Accountant/Cost
Accountants (after the filing their annual return in Form GSTR-9) are required to file their Form
GSTR-9C, during a particular financial year, may be notified by way of Notifications issued by
Government of India from time to time

All such taxpayers are also required to get their account audited and file a copy of audited annual a/cs and reconciliation statement of tax already paid and tax payable as per audited accounts along with GSTR-9C.
